The Inauguration of the Maha Kavi Puthenkavu Mathen Tharakan Chair was held on 24th March,2011 at Pathanamthitta Catholicate College Auditorium. Dr Sukumar Azhikodu, the eminent Literate r & Social critic inaugurated the Mahakavi's chair.  Prof. John Kurakar, President,Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy & Alumni of Catholicate college presided. Mr. Paul Manalil, Dr Geroge Varghese Koppara, Prof G. John, Prof Susamma Samuel, Dr. R. Bhadran were spoke on the occasion. Dr Geroge Varghese Coppara welcomed the gatherings and Dr Rajiv delivered vote of thanks.

     Mahakavi Puthenkavu Mathan Tharakarn was the Professor & Principal of the Catholicate College Pathnanthitta. He has written more than fifty literary books including" Viswa Deepam" Mahakavyam.  He encouraged young talent students and several teachers. He paid memorable contribution to the Freedom Movement and Malayalam literature He passed on 5th April,1993.

        Prof. John Kurakar, the second son of  Mr P.G Mathew Kurakar was born in the 1952. Mrs Thankamma Mathew was the Mother. Prof John Kurakar who has post graduate Degree along with research degree, was professor and HOD of Malayalam Department of St. Gregorious College Kottarakara.

          . He has had his educations from St. Gregorios College Kottarakara, NSS College Nilamel, Catholicate College Pathanamthitta, and University Centre Kariavattom. He is the founder president of Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy, President of the Gandiya Nava Sakthi Sankom, the president of the Social Thinkers Forum and the President of the Society for Computer Science and Research, the President of the Eden Nagar Residence Association, the Vice President &Chief coordinator of the Alumni Associationof the St.GregoriousCollege, Kottarakara. Besides at Present he serves as the chief Editors of the periodicals Chief Editors of the periodicals Mathru Nadu, Kala Sahithy and Kudumba deepam. He is the chair man of Mahakavi Puthenkavu MathanTharakan Chair in Catholicate College ,Pathanmthitta.
               He was the first chief Editor of ‘College Teachers Journal’ more over he served as the Educational Convenor of the Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishattu’. He held the position of programme Officer of National Service Scheme of Kerala University and Project Officer of Adult and Continuing Education and Extention and Popultion Education Programme.
               He served as the Regional President of Little way Association. He had received cash awards and certificates of honour from Kerala University for 5 year consecutively from 1984 in consideration of his spectacular activities and achievements in Adult and Continuing Education. He was the founder Secretary of Alumni Association St. Gregorious Kottarakara. Several tresses and other articles authored two novels “ Vasanthom Valareyakle, and Ajna Theeram Thedy”. These novels were serialized in the periodical’ Vartha Veekshanam’. More over he has written the Educational and enlightening works such as ‘Bhasa deepam, Upanyasa Manjari, Bhasha Sodini, Kerala Kristhiyanikalude Charithram, Quiz Quiz, and Window of Knowledge.  It was this Professor who re-organized ‘Kurakaran Valiya veettil Kudumba Yogam in 1991. He has presented theses in National and international levels.
                  In 1983, he got married to Prof Molly Jacob, daughter of Mr. Jacob, Chief Engineer, Central PWD. She is now HOD of Hindi Department of St. Gregorious College, Kottarakara.
They have been blessed with two children Dr. Maju Kurakar and Mr. Manu Kurakar.Dr Manju Kurakar has been married to Mr. Kuriyan Arimboor who is a Mechanical Engineer, now working as assistant manager in Bajaj Ltd in pune. Mr. Manu Kurakar is a Computer Engineering student.

 A Career Guidance Center and Placement Cell established in St. Gregorious College in the year 2004. The career guidance center providing guidance to the students regarding higher studies and short term  employment courses.  The Placement Cell gives guidance to the students in seeking placement after their respective courses. Innumerable and attractive placement opportunities are open to those who have a drive and urge. Students are advised to make utmost use of the services of the cell.

 The Quiz club of the St. Gregorios College has various awards and prizes to its credit.The teams from the college have secured prizes and awards at various Inter-Collegiate Quiz Competitions sponsored by  various organizations. Quiz club was established in the year 1979,  inaugurated by Dn. John V.John,then the principal. Prof. John Kurakar  presided over the function.

Alumni Association is the leadingorganisation of the former students of St. Gregorios college, kottarakara. Aim of the association is to maintain contact and good relations with our former students. Alumni association has chapters in  UAE, Bahrain, Thiruvananthapuram , Ernakulam, Muscat, Kuwait. We wish  to organise few chapters in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Baroda.   The Association  was formally inaugurated by Rev Fr Prof  V Varghese, former principal of college. the association organized by Prof. John Kurakar.

       The National Service Scheme unit of the St. Gregorios College is one of the leading units in Kerala University The Kottarakara College Unit won various awards at the state level and  National level. The activities of the unit include conducting surveys on health, Medical camps Free coaching classes, Blood donation unit, Free eye camps and construction of houses for the poor. Prof.John Kurakar served in National Service Scheme during the year 1980 to 1984. and successfully conducted five annual camaps  in. Kalayapuram, Attuvassery, Kottara, Muttara and Perukulam . The annual Ten day camps are regularly organised in the rural areas.

ST. GREGORIOS COLLEGE SCIENCE FORUM

  St. Gregorios College Science Forum established in the year 1979. It is organized By Prof.John Kurakar, then the lecturer of the college. The Forum aims at spreading the message of  development through science. The activities include conducting surveys, seminars, study tours Science Exhibition etc To make the students as well as the general public aware of the ways overcoming the problems related to development. The Forum also envisages the screening of films that have educational value.

        Prof. John Kurakar Endowment Scholarship instituted in St .Gregorios College by the   Department of Malayalam in 2007 to commemorate the retirement of Prof.John Kurakar ,Head of Department of Malayalam. The Scholarship will be awarded to the student of BA Communicative English, who Scores the highest mark in Part II Malayalam( Semester II) of the University Examinations.

  Kurakaran family is an ancient family which belongs to the group of St. Thomas Christians.St Thomas christians or Syrian Christians exist at present in different churches and Denominations.The Kurakaran family will be a great contribution to the studies of family history  and development of Kerala. This family has mainly four branches, that is1- Padinjare veedu.2- Puthen veedu 3-Kizhakkedathu,4- Valiyaveedu.

ADULT EDUCATION & EXTENTION PROGRAMME

The Centre for Adult Continuing Education & Extension established in 1980. It is a premier centre with academic status under the University of Kerala. Adult Education Programme started St. Gregorios college in 1983. The unit concentrated its activities on three dimenstions 1- Teaching to students 2- Social survey and Research 3- Community Service.Prof.John Kurakar was the coordinator of the Programme.Dr Sivadasanpillai was the Director of the University of Kerala.
   The role and function of the college unit is in agreement with the changing socio-economic scenario of the country The University of Kerala  honoured the St.Gregorios college and Its Programme coordinator Prof.John Kurakar with Merit Certificate,Cash awards and Ever Rolling Trophy for the meritorious activities of the adult continuing education during the year 1984 to 1990

ST.GEORGE COLLEGE & CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Continuing Education Programme is one of the important activity of the University of Kerala. This programme started in St. Gregorios College in the year 1990. Prof.John Kurakar was the first programme officer and co-coordinator of the college unit. Dr Sivadasan Pillai was the Director of the University.. Mr Kurakar was also the advisory member of the University of Kerala. St. Gregorios College conducted the following short term certificate courses. Jr Certificate in Information Technology, Spoken English, Personality Development course, Pre primary Teachers Certificate course.  Prof John Kurakar received Cash Awards and Ever rolling trophies from the university for  his best performance

JOHN KURAKAR & POPULATION EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Population Education Club is an organization of the University of Kerala.The PEC unit was formed in St.Gregorios College,Kottarakara in the year 1980. John Kurakar was the co-coordinator of the club and advisory member of the University level Programmes. Dr K Sivandasan Pillai was the Director of the Programme.Mr Kurakar conducted More than hundred camps and study programmes in the college and university level. Rev.Fr V.Varghese was the Principal of the college. Sri Ramakrishan Attuvassari was the advisory member of the college level programmes. The association focus on " Science on Social Change" Prof John Kurakar was the state level Education wing president during the year 1979-83.  Mr Kurakar published many science articles in Sashtra Keralam, Grama Sashtram and other publication of  Parishhtu.
